Sierra magazine’s seventh annual rankings of the nation’s greenest universities includes Slippery Rock University in its top 100 list.
The report, released in the September/October issue, gave SRU kudos in planning and waste elimination.
Sierra magazine is described as an “indispensable guide for people who care deeply about nature.” The bimonthly magazine is published by the Sierra Club and reaches more than a million people across North America. The club describes itself as the nation’s oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental group.
“It’s a great accomplishment and honor,” said Cheryl Norton, SRU president. “We are very proud to be included. We constantly monitor our carbon footprint with an eye to minimizing our impact on the planet, and will continue to look for ways to conserve resources and energy. In addition to making physical improvements to our buildings and infrastructure, we’re encouraging our students, faculty and staff to develop more sustainable – and healthy – personal habits as well. It all adds up. This ranking clearly shows we are having an impact and demonstrates to potential students that SRU is concerned about the environment in which we all live.”
Data used in compiling the rankings was taken from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education survey completed by SRU.
SRU has elected to “go green” whenever possible, including use of LEED-certified buildings, low-flow toilets and sinks, recycling efforts, energy conservation and on-demand lighting programs. SRU has also signed the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment and is working to achieve carbon neutrality by 2037.
Sustainable design, renewable resources utilization, energy conservation and awareness of environmental stewardship are all included in SRU’s strategic plan “Reaching for 2025 and Beyond.”
