SRU launches Community Service Corp.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's Center for Student Involvement and Leadership is maximizing opportunities for SRU students to engage in community service through creation of the Community Service Corps and offering $1,250 scholarships in the process.

"The new program offers students the opportunity to participate in on-going community service programming that addresses critical needs in our local communities. In the process, the program will enhance the student's leadership skills," said Laurel Dagnon, CSIL program director.

"The service experiences will facilitate the student's intellectual growth while encouraging them to foster a lifelong commitment to civic responsibility," Dagnon said. "In addition to local service, opportunities also exist on a national and international level through our CareBreak programming."

"We are extremely excited about the opportunities for service that the CSC members will develop for the campus community," she said. "Through the financial support of the Office of Student Life, SRU is supporting 16 students in the CSC program. Each CSC student will be awarded a $1,250 scholarship upon completion of 300 registered service hours."

Currently, the CSIL has 12 students enrolled in the program who transferred from the AmeriCorps program and is seeking an additional four.

The criteria for the position is a commitment to completing 300 service hours, a minimum 2.5 GPA, evidence of on-going commitment to service, a current Pennsylvania drivers license and successful completion of a criminal background check, child abuse clearance and sex offender registry search.

The Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, a division of Student Life at SRU, creates valuable developmental and educational opportunities through activities, programs, student organizations, community service and leadership training.
