SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -Students who are missing their family and friends back home after three weeks of classes and residence hall living will have an opportunity to reconnect and show off their new digs during Slippery Rock University's annual "Family and Friends Weekend" Sept. 13-15.
"'Family and Friends Weekend' is our annual event designed to showcase the University and community," said Julie Varnish, assistant director of SRU's Center for Student Involvement and Leadership and event chairperson. "We have again scheduled it in conjunction with Slippery Rock's "VillageFest," the community celebration that also gives campus visitors the chance to meet people in our community and see close up what the downtown has to offer."
VillageFest runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday along downtown's Main Street. A number of SRU students will serve as volunteers.
Pre-registration for the weekend's activities is not required. Registration will take place from 4-8 p.m., Sept. 13, in the Smith Student Center Lobby or the morning of Sept. 14. "Everyone registering is asked to bring a canned food item for donation to our local food bank. Those who donate will receive an SRU gift," Varnish said.
The weekend's opening day festivities begin with a 6-9 p.m. Foam Dance Party on the lawn behind Watson Hall sponsored by the Association of Residence Hall Students. A DJ will provide music and giveaways - and lots of "bubbly foam."
Siblings of campus residents are invited to stay over in the residence halls Friday and/or Saturday night(s) during the weekend. Sept. 14 events kick off with 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. registration in the Smith Student Center Ballroom. (Pre-registration is not required.) Sign up for the e2Campus emergency alert system will be available.
A representative from the Office of Annual Giving will be on hand to offer information, and handle sale of SRU Piggy Banks as part of an on-going campus fundraising program that encourages students to save their change during the year to contribute to a charity or scholarship of their choice.
Free Family Name Art Picture keepsakes will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the ballroom, and a Silent Action for a variety of gift-filled baskets will run 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the ballroom. The basket auction will close at 3 p.m., with winners able to pick up their prize at the Smith Student Center Welcome Desk until 10 p.m., Sept. 14, and 9 a.m. to midnight, Sept. 15.
Those joining the weekend activities are invited to "Pizza with the President" from 11 a.m. to noon, Sept. 14. Cheryl Norton, SRU president, and members of the cabinet, faculty and staff will be available to talk with family members and students in the Smith Student Center Ballroom.
The SRU women's soccer team hosts Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 2 p.m. on Egli Field,
AVI, the campus contract food vendor, will offer a pre-game tailgate picnic near Mihalik-Thompson Stadium from 4-6 p.m. Free tickets to the event will be available at the registration table.
The SRU football team will host Shippensburg at 6 p.m. in the stadium for the annual "White Out Night" game. Everyone attending is encouraged to wear white. "White Out" T-shirts will be available for $5 from the SGA Bookstore.
To help alleviate lines at the stadium ticket booth, advance (cash only) tickets will be available from noon to 9 p.m., Sept. 13 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sept. 14, at the Smith Student Center Information Desk. Adult general admission tickets are $6; visiting PSAC college students with ID are $3; high school and elementary school students (age 6 through high school) $2. SRU students, with valid SRU ID, are free.
The SGA Bookstore will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 13, and10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sept. 14. A 15-percent discount coupon for bookstore purchases will be available at registration.
AVI Dining Services will feature student favorite family recipes for lunch and dinner throughout the weekend for those dining on campus.
The Aebersold Student Recreation Center will be open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sept. 13; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sept. 14 and noon to 7 p.m., Sept. 15. Guests are required to sign-in at the front desk. Children under age18 must have adult supervision at all times.
