SRU hosts 'Family and Friends Weekend'

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Family and friends of Slippery Rock University are being invited to campus for the annual "Family and Friends Weekend" Sept. 14-16 and to join in events ranging from mini-golf, movies, athletic events to Slippery Rock's annual community Village Fest.

"We have tried to keep the entire family in mind in planning the weekend," said Julie Varnish, assistant director in SRU's Center for Student Involvement. "As part of the weekend, we have asked all participants to bring a canned food item or a cash contribution to donate to the local food bank. Those who do so will receive a gift for participating."

Registration opens at 4 p.m., Sept. 14, in the lobby of the Smith Student Center. "Pre-registration is not required and registration will be handled on-site," Varnish said.

The opening day calendar includes a 5 p.m. SRU cross country meet as SRU hosts the Mack Cooper Invitational at nearby Cooper's Lake. Mini-Golf, with glow-in-the-dark golf balls, will be offered from 7:30-10 p.m. on the Smith Student Center patio. (Rain: Student Center Ballroom.)

The Student Government Association Movie Series will present the feature film "Men in Black 3" at 8 p.m. in the Smith Student Center.

Sept. 15, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., activities will be in the Smith Student Center Ballroom where sign up for e2Campus, SRU's emergency alert system, will be available along with a "Baskets of Fun Silent Auction" featuring a variety of donated gift baskets. The basket drawings will be at 4 p.m., with baskets available for pick up at the Student Center Welcome Desk until 10 p.m., or from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 16.

Attendees will be able to make digital photo magnets during the day in the Student Center.

SRU President Cheryl Norton will host "Pizza with the President" from 12:15-1:15 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. Norton, and members of her staff, will meet with parents and answer questions about the University.

Downtown, VillegeFest will run 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering crafters, food vendors, a kids zone, live entertainment and a chicken BBQ.

The SRU men's soccer teams hosts Urbana at 1 p.m. in Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

AVI, the campus contract food vendor, will host a pre-football game tailgate picnic from 4-6 p.m., in the grass area to the right of the stadium parking lot. Picnic tickets will be available at check-in registration.

SRU football takes on Gannon at 6 p.m., for the annual WHITE OUT NIGHT game.

"White Out" T-shirts ($5), designed to "blind" the opponents, are available from the SGA Bookstore located in the Smith Student Center.

Football tickets will be available until 9 p.m., Sept. 14, at the Student Center Welcome Desk and from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. game day. Adult general admission is $6; visiting and PSAC college students with ID, $3; high school and elementary school students ages 6-high school, are $2. SRU students are admitted free with valid ID.

A Family and Friends Mass will be offered at 4 p.m. at the Rock Catholic Center across the street from Old Main.

An Alumni Engagement Legacy Family Tailgate, open to current students and alumni who have grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles or siblings who are currently attending or have graduated from SRU, will be at 4:30 p.m. at the Alumni Pavilion located just west of Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. Cost is $15 per person and reservations are due today at 1.800.Get.Rock.

"We also have a number of other specials planned as part of the weekend," Varnish said, "There will be 20 percent discount coupons good at the SGA Bookstore, and AVI Dining Services will again offer its 'Recipes from Home' program featuring student's favorite family recipes served during lunch and dinner throughout the weekend. Those participating in the weekend are invited to join activities at the Robert N. Aebersold Student Recreation Center, including the 40-foot climbing wall."

The ARC is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sept. 14; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sept. 15; and noon to 7 p.m., Sept. 16.
