SRU Printing Service raising the banner

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -This is a banner story - literally.

Slippery Rock University's Printing Services operation has installed a 54-inch, full color, ink-jet, large format printer capable of churning out banners, posters and yard signs.

"Printing Services had been capable of turning out one-color vinyl signs, but with the coming of the University's 125th anniversary, an increased need for campus signs, posters and banners, we saw the opportunity to expand our services and keep our prices competitive with outside vendors," said Daniel Snyder, manager of printing and mailing services.

The new, roll-fed printer was installed in what had been the mailing services area of Printing Services in Stores Building I. "In effect, we just did a switch of space with our sign- making operation and our mailing-services operation," Snyder said.

"The printer is limited to 54-inches wide, by any length, since we buy our printing stock by the roll," Snyder said. Stock, 34-inch or 54-inch, fed into the printer can be trimmed to meet customer demand for a smaller size.

The printer handles both a light-weight vinyl for indoor banners and a heavier gauge vinyl for outdoor or lamp-post use, he said. It also can print on thin vinyl sheets that are then adhered to poster board or corrugated plastic for indoor signs or yard-signs.

"We had it installed in August and have completed training. One of our first project was the 14-foot banner now hanging outside the University Union promoting the SRU Performing Arts Series," Snyder said.

"Previously we could do only single-color work, but now we offer full-color at about the same costs," he said.

Snyder said a ballpark cost for an 18x24 inch yard sign would be $7.50, with an additional $1 for the metal stake. Indoor banners will cost about $2.25 per square foot, while outdoor banners will be $3.80 per square foot. Indoor posters for campus events will cost $1.50 per square foot. "But they will be on vinyl and have a very good, finished look," Snyder said.

On the drawing board is the possibility of also branching out to large wall graphics that could be used on campus, then easily removed or changed.
