SRU earns U.S. News’ ‘America’s Best Colleges’ top 100 slot

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University has again been named one of the top 100 Regional Universities in the North – and in the top 30 public universities in the region – by U.S. News & World Report as part of its 2012 edition of “America’s Best Colleges.”

The annual rankings report, released today, includes more than 1,400 schools nationwide. Detailed information will be published in the September issue of U.S. News & World Report available on newsstands Friday.

The list is comprised of schools that provide a full range of undergraduate majors and master’s programs. Regional Universities are ranked against their peer group in one of the four geographic regions – north, south, midwest and west.

Institutions included in the North Region are located in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

“Slippery Rock University is proud to be recognized by U.S. News. This ranking is further validation of the quality education we provide at an affordable price,” said Robert Smith, SRU president.

“In recent weeks SRU has been cited as a College of Distinction; was named a “Great College to Work For,” by The Chronicle of Higher Education; and cited as a ‘Best in the Northeast’ university by The Princeton Review. Those accolades followed on the heels of the University earning our very successful reaccreditation with commendations from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. We also earned ABET accreditation for our three computer science programs and we made the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll,” he said.

“Taken together, these awards and recognitions clearly show ‘It is a great time to be at Slippery Rock University.’ Our faculty and staff are dedicated to helping our students succeed and continue to deliver a rock solid education,” he said.

Over the past 27 years, the U.S. News rankings, which groups schools based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, has become widely accepted as a comprehensive research tool for students and parents considering higher education opportunities.

Among topics considered in preparing the annual rankings are indicators of excellence such as peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving.

Slippery Rock University is Pennsylvania’s premier public residential university.
