SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Rocket, Slippery Rock University's weekly student newspaper, has won five top awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association as part of its 30th Gold Circle Awards program for outstanding collegiate journalism.
This year's contest attracted 12,847 entries produced by students at colleges, universities and secondary schools throughout the U.S.
The Rocket's award recipients are:
Alex Mowrey, a communication major from Pittsburgh, who received Second Place-Photo Layout honors (two or more pages) for his "Retro Rock" layout related to homecoming and a Certificate of Merit-Photo Layout (full page) for his "Rockin Bodies" layout coverage of SRU's annual Mr. and Ms. Contest;
Andy Treese, a May communication graduate from East Springfield, who received Third Place-Feature Page Design Broadsheet Format for his May 10, 2013, Thompson Square concert coverage; and a Certificate of Merit-Feature Page Design Broadsheet Format for his Oct. 19, 2012, for "Male Cheerleaders Defy Stereotypes" story and photos; and
Karleigh Santry, a communication major from Girard, Ohio, who received Certificate of Merit-Advertising Layout Design (single advertisement) for work on the Online Rocket.
Mowrey is The Rocket's photo editor and Santry is the advertising manager this year. Treese served as campus life editor last year.
"We are truly proud of the work done by our student staff at The Rocket. It is gratifying to see their work recognized on the national stage," said Mark Zeltner, associate professor of communication and Rocket adviser. "Our staff is dedicated to producing a quality newspaper that in both informative and timely in meeting the needs of the campus, while providing hands-on learning they will carry into journalism jobs after graduation."
