SRU SECA drive continues

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock Universities participation in the annual State Employee Combined Appeal is off to a good start, said Pam Miller, drive chair for SRU and management technician in SRU's Office of Human Resources, who said $3,539 had been raised by mid-week toward the University's overall $14,100 goal.

"We were very pleased by the enthusiasm shown in the opening weeks by faculty and staff in joining the drive," Miller said. The drive runs through Nov. 2.

The SECA drive launched earlier this month with a letter of support from SRU President Cheryl Norton followed by a contribution appeal from Lynne Motyl, assistant vice president for human resources.

SECA is the only charitable campaign allowed by the commonwealth of Pennsylvania in its state offices.

"State employees have a long history of generosity and caring. Since 1977 the State Employee Combined Appeal has been the commonwealth's annual charitable giving campaign. As governor, I am honored to serve as the SECA chairperson," wrote Gov. Tom Corbett in support of the drive. "SECA is an opportunity for state employees to come together in a combined demonstration of kindness."

The SECA Resource Guide for 2012 lists more than 1,400 organizations and charities included in the fund raising campaign. Donors may select the charity of their choice to receive their support. SECA was designed in part to save fund raising costs by combining fundraising efforts under a central umbrella.

While the drive is statewide, there are 19 specific charities in Butler County to which donors may choose to earmark their contributions.

Employees can make a pledge through a payroll deduction or as an outright, onetime gift. Credit card gifts cannot be accepted.

"I know that our faculty and staff will support their favorite charities by participating in the campaign. It is a way we can help others and make a difference for those in need," Miller said.
