Michael Wolf, a 1988 Slippery Rock University political science graduate and former member of the SRU Council of Trustees, has been named acting secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Health. The appointment was made Thursday by Gov. Tom Corbett.
As secretary, Wolf is the commonwealth’s top health regulator and is responsible for carrying out the health department's mission to promote healthy lifestyles, prevent injury and disease and to assure the safe delivery of quality health care for all Pennsylvania citizens. The cabinet-level post reports directly to the governor.
Wolf was appointed acting secretary following the resignation of Eli N. Avila.
He served on the SRU council from 1995 to 2001.
Prior to joining the department of health, Wolf was director of worldwide public affairs and policy for Pfizer Inc. the world’s larges research-based pharmaceutical company. He directed policy in Pennsylvania.
Wolf has also served as a government relations and company development consultant to the Central Pennsylvania Life Sciences Greenhouse, an early-stage, venture capital company specializing in start-up biotech companies.
The SRU graduate served in the Tom Ridge administration for eight years, including being appointed as deputy secretary for the Office of International Business Development from 2000 to 2003. In that role, he served as principal strategist and spokesman for the commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s international efforts.
In addition to his SRU degree, Wolf earned a masters in business administration from the University of Phoenix.
