SRU's annual Healthfest offers screenings, information

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University students in health and health-related fields will have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge along side professionals in a variety of health areas when the University's annual daylong Healthfest opens Oct. 16.

SRU's Aebersold Student Recreation Center will host the free event from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., offering a number of health screenings along with information on a number of health issues.

The fair is open to the campus and regional community.

Brian Mortimer, coordinator of wellness and the SRU Russell Wright Fitness Center, directs the event.

"This year's festival will have nearly 50 booths offering a wealth of health information as well as health-related screenings," Mortimer said.

The annual event gives SRU students studying in health-related fields the chance to offer information on a variety of health issues they have learned in class as well as practice their skills in offering a variety of screenings, including blood pressure and body fat content.

"We mix the student booths with professionals so visitors have the chance to collect a lot of health-related information in a single location," Mortimer said.

Among those organizations participating are: the American Association for Retired People, the Alpha Omega Center, the Allegheny Chesapeake Physical Therapy Clinic, the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, and the Butler County Area Agency on Aging. The Butler County Children's Center, Butler Family Chiropractic, Butler Lions Club, Butler Memorial Hospital, the Center for Community Resources, Chiropractic Care Center in Slippery Rock, the Center for Organ Recovery and Education, Ellwood City Hospital Behavior Health Unit, the Grape Vine Center, Grove City Medical Center, Grove Manor Nursing Home and Personal Care Home, Hatha Yoga of Slippery Rock, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Message Therapy of Mercer, McCool's Identity Theft Protection, Mental Health Association in Butler County, Slippery Rock Senior Center, Transition Health Care of Grove City, Autumn Grove in Harrisville, Tri Rivers Surgical Associates, the Visiting Nursing Association of Butler, VITAS Innovative Hospice Care, Wal-Mart Vision Center and the Yolanda G. Barco Oncology Institute of Meadville, among others

Among the screenings being offered are bone density heel screening, body composition screenings and blood pressure.

SRU organizations or academic programs participating in the festival will include the adapted physical activity program, the SRU chapter of the Athletic Training Association, the SRU Counseling Center, the Exercise is Medicine program, exercise and rehabilitative science's senior synthesis and wellness promotion programs, the SRU Gerontology Program and others.

"The festival is an opportunity for the campus and local community to gather a lot of information about their health and potential health issues. It is a chance to talk with experts and ask health questions, Mortimer said.

The SRU cheerleaders, the Rock Dance Co. and SRU Dance Express will provide entertainment.
