SRU opens 'About Thusness' photo show

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -"About Thusness," a photography exhibit displaying the American cultural landscapes of Shree Joglekar, assistant professor of photography at Kansas State University, opens Oct. 21 at Slippery Rock University.

Joglekar, an award-winning photographer originally from India, is scheduled to be on campus for the 5-7 p.m. opening in SRU's Martha Gault Art Gallery in Maltby Center.

The exhibit will be on display until Nov. 15.

"The images I will be exhibiting at SRU come from the new body of work I have started. Most of the images can be categorized as environmental portraits," Joglekar said. "These images signify the nature of my relationship to my surroundings and my search for knowledge through the simple act of seeing."

"As a photographer, I am increasingly interested in the idea of seeing as a tool for knowing, and blurring the boundaries between - or challenging the authorities of - facts and fictions. In this context, these images are about my efforts to analyze 'the nature of reality,'" he said.

Joglekar said his work explores America's natural, cultural and intellectual environments as he interprets them through his own lens.

"When I moved to the United States for graduate studies, after initial amazement about the freeways and air-conditioning, I became starkly aware of my inability to relate to my surroundings," he said. "This sense of alienation intrigued me. It also made me interested in the history of American vernacular landscape, architectural theory and the psychological relation we have with built spaces around us - in the words of Gaston Bachelard, the 'poetics of space.'

Joglekar's photographs have been displayed in several galleries in the U.S., Canada, China, Germany, India and England.

His awards include a 2012 Second Place Award in the National Juried Photography Exhibit; a 2012 Best of Show Award, Biotic Semiotics, in the National Juried Exhibition and a 2012 Honorable Mention Award, Viridian Artist's 2nd International Juried Photography Exhibition, Viridian Artists Gallery in New York City.
