Three Slippery Rock University communication graduates working at newspapers across the U.S. have won awards from their state press associations. All three were part of The Rocket newspaper staff as students.
Josh Rizzo, a 2010 graduate now with the Kirksville Daily Express, received a first place honor for his story on concussions in the Best Sports Feature Story category from the Missouri Press Association. He also earned second place in the Best Sports Photography category for his “Basketball Pass” photo. He received an Honorable Mention with fellow reporter Bud Schrader in the Best Sports News Story or Package category for their “Vindicated – State Champs” story.
Jason Hunsicker, a 2004 SRU graduate also with the Kirksville Daily Express, took third place from the Missouri Press Association in the Best News or Feature Series category for his “Barber Trial” stories, and third place in the Best Investigative Reporting category for his story on “Tax Liens.” He received an Honorable Mention in the Best Feature Story category for his “Love Story” article.
The newspaper’s entire staff earned a third place in the General Excellence category.
Colin McGuire, a 2007 SRU graduate now with the Frederick Post-Gazette, received two, first-place awards from the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association. The awards were in the Online Commentary or Blog and the Headline categories for newspapers with 30,000-75,000 circulations.
