SRU grad teaches unique course

Jason Varnish, a 2003 Slippery Rock University master’s degree sport management graduate and head of the Consol Energy Center’s box office, is sharing his expertise by teaching one of the nation’s only college-level courses on ticketing for entertainment events

Varnish, who was featured in a Venues Today article, teaches his elective course in Point Park University’s Sports, Arts and Entertainment Management Program.

As an SRU student, Varnish interned at Heinz Filed and then joined the Mellon Arena, which was later replaced by the Consol Center. The Consol Center is home to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

He told the publication his class covers topics such as negotiations, working with promoters to fill open dates, how to work backwards from a gross revenue objective to price tickets and how to attract acts.

To give his students’ hands-on experience, Varnish creates several mock events at the Energy Center such as an arena concert for Lady Gaga and a rock festival headlined by British band Arctic Monkeys and The Killers, then allows students to work out the logistics as part of a final project.

Varnish earned his undergraduate degree in communication from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Slippery Rock University is Pennsylvania's premier public residential university. Slippery Rock University provides students with a comprehensive learning experience that intentionally combines academic instruction with enhanced educational and learning opportunities that make a positive difference in their lives.
