SRU student veterans’ programs earn U.S. Senate praise

Slippery Rock University has been awarded a Certificate of Special Recognition from the U.S. Senate for its efforts in “honoring and educating student veterans throughout the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.”

The award is the result of two programming endeavors by SRU’s Center for Student Involvement and Leadership. Pa. Sen. Pat Toomey (R) sponsored the certificate.

A new program, “Skills Learned, Respect Earned – Valuing the Veteran on Our College Campuses,” will be launched at a conference March 31, with an emphasis on giving faculty and staff tools and information gleaned from best practices to welcome and retain returning veterans to PASSHE schools. SRU’s Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services in conjunction with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and its 14 universities are sponsoring the conference.

SRU has long recognized the contributions made by student veterans both inside and outside the classroom. The University’s efforts on-behalf of these students was recently recognized by the Pittsburgh-based G.I. Jobs magazine, which cited SRU as “Military Friendly” for its work in assisting veterans seeking help in applying for or returning to college following military service.

G.I. Jobs, a veteran-owned Victory Media publication, honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools for their work with veterans.

SRU currently enrolls more than 220 veterans, active military students and military spouses and dependents.

The CSIL and SRU’s Office of Enrollment Services will host a Veterans’ Appreciation Breakfast at 8 a.m., Nov. 11, in the Smith Student Center, followed by a Veteran’s Day Ceremony at 11 a.m., on the west lawn of the Russell Wright Alumni House and Conference Center. Brig. Gen. Kevin Jacobsen, a 1980 SRU political science graduate, now commander of the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations headquartered in Quantico, Va., will be the speaker.

Slippery Rock University is Pennsylvania's premier public residential university.
