Neil Berg’s ‘Broadway Holiday’ launches SRU holiday season  


SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Neil Berg’s “Broadway Holiday” comes to Slippery Rock University Dec. 2 for a one-night performance as part of the University’s Performing Arts Series.

           The 7:30 p.m. show is in Miller Auditorium.

           “This show is a perfect way to open the holiday season,” said Deborah Baker, SRU director of special events. “This is a show for the whole family and features not only holiday songs but favorites from a host of Broadway musicals.”

           “Neil Berg, who also put together our ‘100 Years of Broadway’ show in 2009, is now known to local audiences for assembling a great show. This holiday concert will provide a great evening of entertainment,” Baker said.

           Singers scheduled to appear are Lawrence Clayton, Rita Harvey, Grant Norman, Andrea Rivette and Danny Zolli, all veteran Broadway performers. Eugene Gwozdz will be the pianist and musical director.

            Among the holiday selections on the program are “We Need a Little Christmas,” from “Mame”; “Christmas Song,” “My Simple Christmas Wish” and “Count Your Blessings” from “White Christmas,” as well as traditional favorites “Please Come Home For Christmas,” “O Holy Night,” “What Christmas Means to Me,” “Happy Holiday,” “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” “The Lonely Jew on Christmas” from “South Park, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”

Other Broadway selections on the program are “Heaven on Their Minds” from “Jesus Christ Superstar”; “Think of Me” from “The Phantom of the Opera”; “Why God Why” from “Miss Saigon”; “Cabaret” from “Cabaret”; “Sherry” from “Jersey Boys”; a Judy Garland medley, including “The Trolley Song,” from “Meet Me in St. Louis” and “Get Happy”/”Happy Days Are Here Again”; “Belleau Wood”; “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked”; “Bring Him Home” from “Les Misérables”; and a host of others.

AVI, the campus contract food vendor, is offering a pre-performance dinner at 5:30 p.m. (doors open 5:15 p.m.) in the University Club of North Hall. Reservations, $24, per person, inclusive, may be made by calling 724.738.4245. The menu will offer: Fried calamari, mixed winter greens salad, roasted beef tenderloin with port sauce, sweet potato puree, green beans with sage and scallions, and chocolate coffee gingerbread cake with poached pears for dessert.

The Performing Arts Series concludes March 30 with “Tap Kids,” a performance of eight extraordinary rhythm tap dancers from across the U.S. Tickets are $20 for adults; $18 for seniors and youth under age 18; and $8 for SRU students. Call 724.738.2018 for reservations.
