Rock teams chase championships

The Rock men's and women's soccer teams and the SRU football team have earned the right to play in championship competitions this weekend.

The men's soccer team earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Tournament and will host fourth-seeded Millersville University at 1 p.m., Nov. 16 at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The Rock, under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Mike Bonelli, compiled a 13-3-3 record this fall and won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship last Saturday, beating host Mercyhurst University in penalty kicks in Erie. The NCAA tournament berth is SRU's first since 1999 and the first under Bonelli's direction.

The women's soccer team earned a No. 2 berth in the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament and will play either Edinboro or Shippensburg in a 2 p.m., Nov. 17 match at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. Edinboro and Shippensburg will meet at 1 p.m., Nov. 15 at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium to determine The Rock's opponent.

The Rock, under the guidance of veteran head coach Noreen Herlihy, compiled a 13-3-2 record this fall before dropping a PSAC tournament quarterfinal match to Gannon University. The Rock is making its fourth consecutive and ninth overall appearance in the NCAA playoffs.

The football team claimed the outright PSAC-Western Division Championship with its win last Saturday at Seton Hill University and will play at Bloomsburg in the Conference Championship Game Nov. 16. Kickoff is at 12:30 p.m. The Rock, under the guidance of veteran head coach George Mihalik, compiled a 9-1 record this fall and is making its second PSAC title-game appearance in the last three seasons.

SGA will sponsor two fan busses to Bloomsburg. Registrations and a $5 refundable deposit will be taken on a first-come first-served basis at the SGA Bookstore.

The Rock sports information office will provide further information, including ticket sales, for all three championship events via http://www.rockathletics.com, the official website of Rock athletics.
