Governor names Baker-Schroat student trustee

Courtney Baker-Schroat, a Slippery Rock University accounting, finance and health services administration major from Pittsburgh, has been named a member of the SRU Council of Trustees by Gov. Tom Corbett.

In his letter to Baker-Schroat informing her of the appointment, he said. “Please accept my best wishes for success in your new responsibilities and appreciation for your dedicated service to the commonwealth.”

Baker-Schroat is vice president of the Finance and Economics Club and secretary of the Future Healthcare Leaders at SRU and has been a member of the SRU Deans List since 2009.

Charles Curry, then acting president of SRU, recommended her for the position to John Cavanaugh, chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, who ultimately recommended her to the governor.

Her recommendation letters cited her as “one of the most dedicated and ambitious people I know. She always goes above and beyond in everything she pursues.” She was also cited as punctual, reliable, active in class discussions and for completing her work on time.

In her application for the post, Baker-Schroat said, “I believe that I can help bring the necessary changes to the University and can effectively voice the concerns of the student body. A Slippery Rock University trustee must act as an intermediary between the Council of Trustees and the student body.”

“I certainly want to congratulate Courtney on her appointment as a member of the council. I look forward to working with her on the issues faced by the University, and know I can count on her energy and abilities to serve well as a student trustee,” said Cheryl Norton, SRU president.

Baker-Schroat replaces Brandon Maharaj who graduated at the end of summer. Her term runs through Nov. 9, 2016, or until she graduates.

Slippery Rock University is Pennsylvania's premier public residential university. Slippery Rock University provides students with a comprehensive learning experience that intentionally combines academic instruction with enhanced educational and learning opportunities that make a positive difference in their lives.
