SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's efforts on behalf of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis has raised more than $26,035 through the "Up 'til Dawn" program. It's a project Faelyn Casey, an exercise science major from Annapolis, Md., will long remember.
Casey was one of four SRU students to enter the event's Head Shaving Contest - and won by a hair. Those participating in the Up 'til Dawn program donated their spare change to collection buckets for each of the four contestants with Casey receiving the highest donation total, earning her the "honor" of having her head shaved.
"The reason I entered to shave my head for cancer is because I know many people whose lives have been impacted by cancer. My father's mother died when he was my age when she lost her battle with lymphoma; I never knew her and it makes me upset. I wanted to show my support for all the kids and their families who are in, or have been in, situations like my dad's," she said.
More than 275 SRU students came together at midnight Nov. 8 in the Aebersold Student Recreation Center prepared to stay up until 6 a.m. as part of the fundraising program.
Participating students formed teams and spent the night competing against one another other in a variety of challenges.
At 6 a.m., SRU's donation total was $26,035.93.
Fundraising is still open and will continue until the spring. Donations can be made to individual students or the University. To donate directly to the SRU visit: http://www.utd.stjude.org/SRU.
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas.
The hospital's mission is to advance cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. No child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay. No family ever receives a bill for treatment.
