Rock football, soccer teams advance in NCAA competition

Two Rock fall sports teams earned the right to advance in National Collegiate Athletic Association Conference postseason competition last weekend.

SRU's women's' soccer team, coached by Noreen Herlihy, won a 2-1, overtime decision over Shippensburg University Sunday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium earning a "Sweet 16" berth for the third consecutive season.

The Rock, ranked 12th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America National Poll, take a 14-3-2 record into the match Nov. 22 against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division rival California University of Pennsylvania at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y. The start time is not yet set.

The Rock football team, which lost a 42-38 decision last Saturday in the PSAC title game at Bloomsburg, received its first NCAA playoff berth since 1999 and will play a first-round game at Winston-Salem State University. Kickoff in North Carolina is at 1 p.m., Nov. 23.

The NCAA berth was the fourth earned by The Rock under current head coach George Mihalik, who led SRU to a 9-2 overall record and the PSAC-Western Division championship this fall.
