A four-member Slippery Rock University sport management team has taken first place in the inaugural Sports Entertainment and Venues Tomorrow Conference Case Study Competition hosted by the University of South Carolina sport and entertainment management department.
The SRU team included Kristopher Nolt of Stevens, Kyle Heiden of Reading, Michael Perhosky of Scott Township and David Riederer of Cranberry Township.
The conference was presented in conjunction with Venues Today magazine and was co-sponsored by AEG Facilities, Comcast Spectacor, Feld Entertainment and Contemporary Services Corp.
“This was a great conference, especially for our team,” said Brian Crow, SRU professor of sport management, who accompanied the team. “The conference included research presentations and panel discussions, a career fair, awards ceremony and provided an excellent opportunity for our students to network with those already working in the field.”
SRU undergraduates competed against students from the University of South Dakota, Liberty University and the University of South Carolina in a program that required the teams to compile a solution paper and offer a 20-minute oral presentation to a panel of academic and industry judges. The SRU case study involved a fictional hockey team considering relocation and/or expansion and involved preparation of a business plan, including a new name, logo, brand characteristics, comprehensive marketing and communication strategies, and related expenses.
The first-place honor included four, free passes for next year’s team to attend the conference.
“The competition was a great opportunity to use the skills we developed through the sport management program in a practical setting. I'm proud of all my teammates’ hard work and their dedication to the project and the department,” Nolt said.
