Swiney, Childress, five players earn PSAC field hockey honors

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -The Slippery Rock University field hockey team landed a school record five players on the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference All-Conference team. Head coach Julie Swiney was named PSAC-West Coach of the Year and Baylee Childress, a midfielder from Boyertown, earned Freshman of the Year honors.

SRU’s five selections to the All-PSAC West squad include first team selections Gabrielle Malishchak, a midfielder from Wanamie, and Kelsey Gustafson, a sophomore midfielder from Endwell, N.Y. Second team selections included Childress, Ally Banks, a midfielder from Wilkes-Barre, and Courtney Lee, a goalie from Mountain Top.

Prior to this year, the most student-athletes SRU had placed on the All-Conference team in one season was three in 1988 and 2009.

Swiney was recognized by her coaching peers after turning the SRU program around over the last three seasons and leading the team to its best year in more than a decade this fall. The Rock finished the year ranked No. 9 in the nation, won eight games for the first time since 1998 and only the sixth time in school history, and qualified for the PSAC playoffs for the second consecutive year.
