SRU field hockey produces 3 All-America selections; Childress named national Rookie of the Year

CHANDLER, Ariz. –Gabrielle Malishchak, a Slippery Rock University field hockey standout from Wanamie, has been named to both Division II All-America teams, earning first-team honors from Synapse Sports and second-team honors from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.

Baylee Childress of Boyertown was named national Rookie of the Year from Synapse Sports, and Kelsey Gustafson from Endwell, N.Y., joined the pair on the Synapse Sports All-America team.

Malishchak, who becomes the first NFHCA Division II All-American at SRU, caps her career as one of the best players ever at SRU. She adds the All-America honors to her list of accomplishments. She is the only four-time All-Conference selection to ever play at The Rock, ranks in the top 10 in every career-scoring category and was recently invited to the NFHCA North/South Senior Game.

Childress was named to the Synapse Sports All-Rookie team and took top honors on that team to be named the national Rookie of the Year. After redshirting last season, Childress started in all 18 games this fall and helped lead a defensive effort that yielded less goals than the program had in more than 10 years. She was also named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Freshman of the Year.

Gustafson earns her second postseason honor this fall with a nod on the All-America second team for Synapse Sports as a defender. Earlier this fall, she was named to first team All-PSAC honors after leading the defensive unit to its best performance in more than a decade.

SRU finished the record-setting 2012 season with an 8-10 overall record, winning eight games for the first time since 1998 and for just the sixth time in program history. The Rock finished the year ranked No. 9 in Division II and spent a record seven consecutive weeks in the national rankings.
