Internship earns SRU student $500 PennACE honor

Grace Evans, a Slippery Rock University mathematics major from Apollo, has been recognized as one of three PennACE Student of the Year award recipients. She is first SRU student to earn the distinction and will receive $500 as part of the honor.

The annual competition is open to all students who attend colleges that are members of the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Employers, a collaborative organization of career development and recruitment professionals that provides professional growth and networking opportunities designed to enhance career development practices for Pennsylvania college and university students and graduates. Membership ranges from large higher education institutions to small, private college such as Westminster.

The award honors the students’ outstanding performance and dedication in their internship or co-op experiences.

Evans was selected for her work as an outreach intern with Amizade Global Service Learning during the summer of 2012. Nominations are provided from both a staff member of their institution and their internship site supervisor. Applicants must also submit a summary statement of their internship work and how it will help them in their career plans. Evans will be among those honored at the Annual PennACE state conference in Harrisburg next May.

Erin Lingenfelter, an exercise science major from Ridgway, was a finalist in the competition in the non-profit category for her summer internship at the Bradford Regional Medical Center.

The award is named for the late JoAnn Day, a long-time cooperative education and career services professional who served at Bloomsburg University and Lycoming College for more than 25 years. Day’s passion and energy for students is embodied in the annual award.

SRU has been involved with PennACE for more than 25 years. John Snyder, associate director of SRU’s Career Education and Development Office, and Carla Hart, retired director, both served as president of the organization.
