SRU hosts ‘Friends and Family Weekend’ Sept 9-10

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Some Slippery Rock University students may think they are “at home” next weekend when the University marks “Friends and Family Weekend,” including meals made from “old family recipes” and family fun activities.

SRU cosponsors emergency preparedness workshops

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – As part of the 9/11 Week of Remembrance events and in the wake of the recent 5.8 earthquake felt locally, the American Red Cross and Butler County Emergency Management will conduct two workshops to better prepare Slippery Rock University students and the Slippery Rock community deal with both man-made and natural disasters.

Baghouse filter construction nears completion target

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University is continuing its quest for cleaner air. The University, a leader in greening education and implementation, is on target to complete construction of a baghouse for the coal-fired boiler plant by the end of September. The baghouse, a pollution control system, will reduce coal emissions and greenhouse gases.

SRU athletic training major earns CAATE re-accreditation

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – SlipperyRock University’s athletic training major, housed in the department of exercise and rehabilitative sciences, has received 10-year continuing accreditation status for its program from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education headquartered in Round Rock, Texas.

SRU targets sustainability awarenessschedules ‘FRESH’ film screening

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Building on the sustainability and green programming already under way at Slippery Rock University, the University’s Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, the Robert A. Macoskey Center for Sustainable Systems Education and Research and AVI Fresh, the campus contract food vendor, will co-host a screening of “FRESH” at 8:30 p.m., Aug. 30.


SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Christine Walsh, assistant professor of elementary education and early childhood, spent a lot of her summer at the B.F. Jones Memorial Library in Aliquippa, but she wasn’t reading. Walsh, and five SRU graduate students, worked with 11 children from the Aliquippa School District to help them improve their literacy and writing skills.

SRU scores ABET accreditation trifecta; joins prestigious group

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s department of computer science has scored a trifecta by earning accreditations for its information technology, information science and computer science programs from ABET Inc. SRU joins Drexel, the University of North Florida and the University of South Alabama as one of only four institutions nationally to have earned ABET accreditation in all three programs.

SRU’s Harmony House earns LEED Silver Certification

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Harmony House at Slippery Rock University, an energy efficient classroom and office building for sustainability education and research, has been awarded LEED Silver Certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a national program operated by the U.S. Green Building Council that recognizes design, construction operation and maintenance of high performance green buildings.
