SRU dance majors face adjudication time

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – More than 40 Slippery Rock University dance majors are stepping, twirling and leaping into the final component of their semester today. They are being adjudicated by dance faculty in modern, jazz, tap and classical Indian dance.

SRU art majors create stylish bicycle racks

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Who says bike racks have to be boring. Two Slippery Rock University art majors have constructed stylish bicycle racks from recycled bicycle frames. Both racks will be rolled into place today in front of Bailey Library and the Robert M. Macoskey Center for Sustainable Systems Education and Research.

SRU dance majors present eclectic fall concerts Dec. 3-4

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Audience members will see a plethora of dance forms and styles when more than 20 Slippery Rock University dance majors present original choreography at four fall dance concerts Dec. 3-4 in SRU’s Swope Recital Hall. Students will present works in modern, jazz, hip-hop and classical Indian dance genres.

SRU international study opportunities earn national recognition

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University earned two national recognitions in the Institute of International Education’s recent Open Doors Report on International Education Exchange. The University was ranked 14th among master’s degree-granting institutions for students participating in short-term study abroad programs, and 34th for the total number of study abroad students.

University saves money by reducing paper, toner usage

You might be surprised to learn that paper consumption, photocopying and toner expenses add up fast. Slippery Rock University has initiated a strategy that is cutting paper and toner expenses by more than $150,000 a year.

SRU women’s soccer reaches NCAA Sweet 16

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The 23rd-ranked Slippery Rock University women’s soccer team handed No. 15 Kutztown University a 2-1 defeat in the second round of the NCAA tournament Sunday at Keystone Field, giving SRU its first-ever berth in the NCAA Round of 16.


Christmas is coming early for Kayleigh Walsh, a Slippery Rock University elementary education/early childhood education major from Beaver Falls, who has been selected to sing with “Neil Berg’s Broadway Holiday” 3 p.m. performance Sunday at Pittsburgh’s Byham Theater.

Rock volleyball earns NCAA Tournament berth

INDIANAPOLIS – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team earned its fifth berth into the NCAA Division II Tournament in the last seven years Sunday when the Division II Women’s Volleyball Committee announced the 64-team 2011 tournament field.

Two Rock volleyball players earn AVCA honors

LEXINGTON, Ky.Sarah Cadwallader, a resort, recreation and tourism major from York, and Janna Reilly, an exercise science major from Mason, Ohio, both members of the Slippery Rock University volleyball team, have been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association for their performances during the 2011 season.

Bob McComas, Slippery Rock University sports information director and a 1982 SRU master’s degree graduate, has received a Certificate of Appreciation from Wing-Kun Tam of China and president of Lions Clubs International.

CBS football special includes SRU’s Alan Levy 
 

Alan Levy, Slippery Rock University history professor and an expert on the desegregation of professional sports, is expected to be part of CBS’ “Third and Long,” a three-hour special examining racial segregation in professional football airing from 1-2 p.m., Dec. 17, and 4-6 p.m., Dec. 25.

Joanne Leight, Slippery Rock University assistant professor of physical education, has received an Outstanding Professional Award from the Eastern District Association of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. She won for her teaching, scholarship and professional involvement in the field.

New Castle NAACP honors SRU chapter president

Shantreece Johnson, a Slippery Rock University social work major from Erie, is the first recipient of the Evelyn P. Ward Leadership Scholarship, which will be awarded annually to the president of the NAACP Student Chapter at SRU.

Grove City School Board elects SRU’s Susan Herman president

GROVE CITY, Pa.
Susan Herman, assistant professor in Slippery Rock University’s department of exercise and rehabilitative sciences, has been elected president of the Grove City School Board of Directors.
