Michael Ignelzi earns Diamond Honoree award

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Michael Ignelzi, a Slippery Rock University associate professor and graduate coordinator of counseling and development, has received a Diamond Honoree award from the American College Personnel Association. Only 17 individuals nationwide received the award, which recognizes leadership and scholarship.

SRU graduate earns Rising Star Award from PRSA

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Deanna Ferrari, a 2006 Slippery Rock University communication graduate, has been presented the Rising Star Award by the Pittsburgh chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The award was presented at the organization’s annual awards banquet. Ferrari, who had worked as a senior account executive at WordWrite, a Pittsburgh-based public relations firm, is returning to MARC USA, an integrated advertising agency in Pittsburgh, in a newly created social business specialist position. In her new post she will handle all social media operations.

State of the Union address – SRU political science professor offers play-by-play comments

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – For at least one Slippery Rock University assistant professor of political science, Tuesday’s State of the Union address by President Barack Obama was “The Super Bowl,” complete with pre-game, offense and defense, highlight reel – and overtime.

Rock duo take Football Gazette All-America team honors

PITTSBURGH, Kan. - Brandon Fusco of Cranberry Township and Akeem Satterfield of Erie, both Slippery Rock University football standouts, have been named to the Don Hansen Football Gazette All-America team. Fusco was also featured in The Sporting News earlier this week.

Middle States Self-Study in the mail; Slippery Rock University awaits visit

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s “Middle States Commission on Higher Education Self-Study Report” is in the mail and the nearly 75-member committee that prepared the 100-page document is keeping its fingers crossed that their efforts will result in full approval.

Brandon Fusco, Slippery Rock University senior offensive center, has had his status as one of the top collegiate football student athletes in the nation and a bonafide NFL prospect further validated by receiving an invitation to participate in the 62nd Under Armour Senior Bowl.

Dance major finds passion, earns prestigious conference invite

. – Alicia Garrity said she enrolled at Slippery Rock University intending to become a physical therapist, but found her passion in dance. Garrity’s progress and research on dance styles recently earned her an invitation to present and perform at the March 31-April 2 National Conference on Undergraduate Research at Ithaca College.

Grant supports SRU’s ‘Exercise is Medicine’ initiative

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University has received a $13,200 Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education grant to launch its version of “Exercise is Medicine,” a health initiative that embraces physical activity as an essential part of human wellness. SRU will implement a walking program for students, faculty and staff and a health care referral system for free personal training provided by trained students Feb. 8.

SRU offers Marcellus Shale Basic Well Controls programs

Slippery Rock University’s Division of Lifelong Learning is partnering with the Petroleum College International, a division of the University of Houston, in Victoria, Texas, to bring a Marcellus Shale Basic Well Control program to western Pennsylvania beginning April 12.

SRU music therapy graduate is one-woman traveling band

Andrea (McClellan) Nuthak, a 2006 Slippery Rock University music therapy graduate, is a one-woman traveling band that is helping Hershey area children with disabilities improve their motor and communication skills, according to ABC Channel 27-TV, WHTM in Harrisburg, York Lancaster and Lebanon.

Rock graduate stars as cosmetologist in NYC

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Kelly Reed, a 1988 Slippery Rock University graduate, has become a big-time cosmetologist on Broadway. Professional companies have hired her to do the makeup for “Beauty and the Beast,” “Mary Poppins,” “The Producers,” “Phantom of the Opera,”  “The Lion King” and other shows.

‘Shifting Ground’ spotlights student choreography

. – Visually rich choreography by eight Slippery Rock University dancers and a dance faculty member will be presented when SRU Dance Theatre offers its annual winter concert “Shifting Ground” at 8 p.m. Feb. 3-5 in Miller Auditorium. Students will also perform “Of the Earth Far Below,” a work by New York City choreographer Doug Varone.

Students laud renovated Vincent Science Center

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s Vincent Science Center reopened Tuesday following a three-year renovation, transforming the delivery of health and science education.  Students described the learning center as the best-looking building on campus and said the work shows the University’s commitment to academic quality.

SRU graduate gets lesson on keeping address book up-to-date

Keep your address book up-to-date, you never know when it might pay off. The advice rewarded Slippery Rock University’s December graduate Sureni Ranasinghe, an international student from Sri Lanka, with the opportunity to see 33-year-old photographs of her father and the chance to meet one of his long-lost friends.
