Rock’s Maron Brown earns All-America honor

BEAVERTON, Ore. - Maron Brown, Slippery Rock University senior forward from Salisbury, Md., added another award to his collection this week when the Division II Bulletin named him as an honorable mention All-America performer.

Rock’s baseball coach reaches 800-win milestone

Slippery Rock University’s Jeff Messer became the 26th NCAA Division II head baseball coach to record his 800th win.
Messer reached the milestone Sunday with his team's 3-1 win over West Liberty University in the first game of a doubleheader at Jack Critchfield Park. He added his 801st career win with a 5-1 victory in the second game of the twinbill.

Alan Levy wins award for scholarly, creative achievement

Alan Levy, Slippery Rock University history professor and author of “Floyd Patterson: A Boxer and a Gentleman,” the life story of the legendary boxer, has earned the 2010-11 President’s Award for Scholarly and Creative Achievement for 2010-11.

Kimberly Smith wins SRU’s outstanding teacher award

Kimberly Smith, Slippery Rock University assistant professor of exercise and rehabilitative sciences, has been selected to receive the 2011 President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award will be presented at SRU’s Academic Honors Convocation at 2 p.m., April 3, in Morrow Field House.

The event will also honor nearly 2,812 SRU dean's list students, 60 Presidential Scholar honorees, 636 academic scholarship recipients, 143 scholar athletes, 11 community service learning volunteers and the other 2011 President's Award recipients.

SRU says ‘Oui’ to French Film Festival

The free festival, which begins tonight, includes five films and provides insight into different aspects of French culture, including the Paris ballet, financial conflict in French-speaking Mali and the life of designer Coco Chanel.

SRU senior earns prestigious Oxford doctoral program slot

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Christine Lundblad, a Slippery Rock University chemistry major from Pittsburgh, will cross the pond to the island of Stonehenge, Harry Potter and The Beatles, but not just to see the sights. Lundblad has been accepted into the doctor of philosophy program in inorganic chemistry at the University of Oxford.

SRU PR staff nabs national Higher Education Marketing awards

A poster titled “Want to Change the World?” promoting a Slippery Rock University political science degree, and the University’s viewbook, designed to attract potential students to campus have earned honors from the Higher Education Marketing Report.
The honors are part of the 26th Annual Educational Advertising Awards program. More than 2,600 entries were received from more than 1,000 U.S. and international colleges, universities and secondary schools.

Music faculty perform Miles Davis’ “Birth of the Cool”

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –Six Slippery Rock University music faculty will perform songs from “Birth of the Cool,” a classic Miles Davis recording, when they present a “Faculty Jazz Concert” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in SRU’s Swope Music Hall. The group will play nine of the album’s 12 songs, including its most enduring number “Boplicity.”

SRU PR Office scores CUPRAP honors ‘hat trick’

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s University Public Relations Office scored a ‘hat trick,’ nabbing three awards in annual competition sponsored by CUPPAP- The Association of Communicators in Education. SRU won a Gold CUPPIE Award and a Bronze CUPPIE in the print publications/ posters category, and a Silver CUPPIE in the print publications/direct mail category.

Daugherty earns All-America honors; Hendershot takes 10th

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Cameron Daugherty, a Slippery Rock University men’s track star from Mililani, Hawaii, earned All-America honors in pole vault, and Whitney Hendershot, an SRU women’s track star from Salamanca, N.Y., finished 10th in the high jump competition at last Saturday’s NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Budding scientists take honors, scholarship at PJAS event

SRU hosts March 17 marijuana legalization debate

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The University Program Board at Slippery Rock University will bring the debate as to whether or not to legalize marijuana to campus March 17 when it sponsors the “Great Debate,” pitting Steve Hager, longtime editor of High Times Magazine, against Robert Stutman, a Federal Drug Enforcement Administration veteran, in a frank discussion of the issues.

Inline Hockey Club at SRU earns national ranking

The Inline Hockey Club at Slippery Rock University, ranked No. 4 in the nation, finished the season with a 13-4-1 record took second place in the conference.
The team prided itself on being a deep scoring team, averaging 6.8 goals per game while finishing second in the conference for scoring.
Ryan McGeehan, an education major from Grove City, and Josh Newton, a biology major from Irwin, led the way in points with 31 each.

Nicole Kurash, ’00, becomes youth program director
Nicole Kurash, a 2000 Slippery Rock University graduate, has been named director of inpatient youth programs at Gateway Rehabilitation Center in Pittsburgh. Gateway is a non-profit organization that provides addiction treatment for adults and youth.

SRU’s Fusco drafted by Minnesota Vikings

NEW YORK - Brandon Fusco, a Slippery Rock University senior offensive center from Cranberry Township, was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft Saturday from Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
Fusco was selected with the seventh pick of the sixth round and was the 172nd overall pick, becoming the highest drafted player in SRU program history and becoming the first player drafted since 1989.

Men’s Ice Hockey Club at SRU takes CHMA title

The Men’s Ice Hockey Club at Slippery Rock University won the College Hockey Mid-America championship for the second consecutive year this winter with an 11-3 league record and added the CHMA playoff title last weekend in competition at the Wheeling (W. Va.) Civic Center.
