University attacks false fire alarms

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University will greatly reduce if not eliminate false fire alarms to University Police by replacing aging phone lines with fiber-optic technology, said Paul Novak, SRU director of environmental health and safety.

Rock men’s basketball team makes postseason tournament

Slippery Rock University’s men’s basketball team earned its second consecutive trip to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference postseason tournament with an 87-66 win last Saturday over Clarion University in Morrow Field House. Post-season action begins Tuesday.

Students ‘STEM’ onto national stage

 SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – If there is a ladder to employment success in this economy, it is a college degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics coupled with a student-faculty research project, professors say. SRU presents ‘The Merchant of Venice’

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University theatre will present an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice” set against the backdrop of prejudice against Jews during Mussolini’s rise to power in Italy before World War II. The production opens March 1 and will be presented six times through March 7 in SRU’s Miller Auditorium.

SRU students Carnegie Hall bound

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Twenty-two members of the Slippery Rock University Concert Choir and Women’s Choir will perform Monday night in New York City’s Carnegie Hall, one of the most famous venues in the world. Students left Friday and will return Tuesday.

Baghouse passes ‘snif’ test

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Thanks to the addition of a baghouse system, Slippery Rock University’s coal-burning boiler plant particulate emissions are nearly 100 times lower than the federal legal limit. Third-party test results released Monday show the plant located next to Morrow Field House emits no smoke and a minute amount of particulates.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – NASA, impressed by Patrick Burkhart, Slippery Rock University professor of geography, geology and the environment, has recruited him to co-lead the space agency’s Lunar and Planetary Science Academy summer internship program. Burkhart will teach 20 of the nation’s finest college science majors about the surface of the earth and supervise a student-faculty research expedition to the Grand Canyon.

Research symposium submission deadline nears

 SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Feb. 13 is the deadline for Slippery Rock University students to submit a student-faculty research project proposal for presentation during the University’s April 10 “Symposium for Student Research, Scholarship and Creative Achievement.” The symposium, open to students in all academics fields, will provide a valuable learning experience and a graduate school and job-search credential, organizers said.
