Modern languages, cultures scholarship honors Jack Hill Jr.

 SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Faculty and students in Slippery Rock University’s department of modern languages and cultures have voted to rename the Modern Languages and Cultures Scholarship the Jack Hill Jr. Memorial Scholarship honoring the SRU student from Roselle, N.J., who died during a basketball conditioning session Sept. 10.

National Collegiate Baseball Writers honor SRU 5 players
 

Ryan Oglseby, an undeclared major from Wexford and pitcher for Slippery Rock University’s baseball team, headlined a list of five SRU players named today to National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II Preseason All-Atlantic Region and All-America honors.

Smith retirement gala raises $200,000

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University’s “Farewell Gala Honoring the Presidency and Leadership of Robert and Ramona Smith” as they enter retirement, raised more than $200,000 in need-based scholarship support.

SRU graduate becomes first female Greenwich, Conn., police captain 
 

GREENWICH, Conn. – Pamela Gustovich, a 1985 Slippery Rock University physical education graduate, has been promoted from lieutenant to captain in the Greenwich, Conn., Police Department, becoming the department’s first female captain.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Joshua Young, chair of the
Slippery Rock University Council of Trustees, today announced that “After consultation with Guido Pichini, chairman of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education board of governors, and with the pending departure of President Robert Smith, the University will activate its succession plan whereby Charles Curry, vice president for administration and finance, will serve as acting president.”  Smith retires Feb. 10 after 12 years at SRU.

SRU trustees establish Smith Community Leadership Award;Name retiring President Robert Smith as first recipient 


SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –
The Slippery Rock University Council of Trustees today created the Robert M. Smith Community Leadership Award to honor those whose leadership has made a significant impact in the community, then named Robert Smith, SRU’s retiring president and award namesake, as its first recipient.

SRU trustees honor art professor, retiring trustee 

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University Council of Trustees today named the Art Sculpture Building in honor of James Myford, professor emeritus of art who served the University 29 years before retiring in 1997, and honored John Thornburgh, retiring 10-year trustee who has served with distinction.

Francis Barnes, a Slippery Rock University physical education graduate and former Pennsylvania secretary of education, has been appointed chairman of the state board of control overseeing changes to the Duquesne City School District in Duquesne.

Weisenfluh Hall reopening draws interest, praise

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Walk into the renovated Weisenfluh Hall and you immediately sense a restaurant atmosphere. Neon signs trumpet a Mediterranean menu that includes flatbread sandwiches, gyro lamb, roasted red pepper cream soup, apricot rice salad, spinach artichoke dip, tasting plates of hummus and zucchini pancakes. Move to your left and you see rows of desserts such as baklava, blueberry loaf and Lebanese namoura cakes.

‘Movement Speaks’ dance concert ‘Gets There’

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Ten Slippery Rock University dance majors are the only college dancers in the country selected to present “Getting There,” an original choreography by Billy Siegenfeld, founding director of the Jump Rhythm Project in Chicago. Students will present the dance during the University’s “Movement Speaks” winter dance concert Feb. 9-11 in Miller Auditorium.

LEECHBURG, Pa. – Charles “Chuck” Tursky, a 1980 Slippery Rock University graduate and longtime Kiski Area High School head wrestling coach, became the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League's all-time leader in career wins earlier this month when his team beat Burrell High School, 60-14.

Kayaking, rock climbing launch 2012 SRU Outdoor Adventures

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University Outdoor Adventures program will host two indoor events for children in first through 12th grade. Jan. 28 the program will offer basic training in rock climbing. Feb. 4 includes skill development in kayaking.

PASSHE board of governors name Williams interim president

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – William Williams, Slippery Rock University’s provost and vice president of academic affairs since 2003, will become interim president of the University Feb. 11 following the retirement of President Robert Smith. The promotion was made public today as part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education board of governors meeting in Harrisburg.
