Melago, guest artist, present concert

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Kathleen Melago, Slippery Rock University assistant professor of music, and Jennifer Laubenthal, assistant professor of clarinet at Eastern New Mexico University, will continue their woodwind musical collaboration by performing a faculty and guest recital at 7:30 p.m., March 12, in SRU's Swope Recital Hall.

The pair will perform six musical works for woodwinds they co-commissioned, including a composition written by Stephen Barr, SRU professor of music, and Sean Hamilton, a May SRU music education graduate.

Piano trio honors women composers

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - "Lots of grandiose gestures, soaring melodies and lush harmonies" is how Nanette Kaplan Solomon, Slippery Rock University professor of music, describes the Slippery Rock Piano Trio's "Women Gone Wild" concert planned for 4 p.m., March 9.

Some might say the language also illustrates Solomon's piano playing and teaching methods. An SRU professor for 37 years, Solomon will retire in May.

Old Stone House hosts 'Ancient Ales'

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's Old Stone House will host "Ancient Ales," an entertaining and educational program about the history of beer, at 3 p.m., March 8.

The program will combine live brewing demonstrations, informal discussions and sample tastings to explore the important role of beer in Greek, Roman, Egyptian and other ancient cultures.

Nearly 70 SRU faculty, students join three-day 'Diversity, Inclusion Series'

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's three-day "Diversity and Inclusion Series" programs will offer more than 16 breakout sessions presented by nearly 70 faculty, students and guest speakers.

"This year we have worked to involve more faculty and students as guests and panelists," said Erin Strain, director of SRU's Leadership Development Program who has stepped in as program organizer following the departure of previous chair Jessamine Montero-Michaels. "With all-day programs, we hope students and faculty will join in the various programs as their schedules permit. I think the all-day 'Bridges Out of Poverty Certification,' planned for March 6 will be especially popular."

SRU launches online history master's

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University is bringing back the master of arts degree in history, this time as an online program that gives students anywhere convenient access to graduate level education.

Philip Way, SRU provost and vice president for academic affairs, reinstated the master's degree, which the University placed on moratorium in 2012.

Sparrow earns scholarly, creative achievement award

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Tom Sparrow, instructor in Slippery Rock University's philosophy department, has been named the 2013-14 recipient of the President's Award for Scholarly and Creative Achievement.

SRU President Cheryl Norton will present the award as part of the University's annual Academic Honors Convocation at 1:30 p.m., April 5, in Morrow Field House.

SRU researchers examine best ways to help youth with autism

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Four Slippery Rock University students are getting hands-on therapeutic recreation research skills while working with two members of the University parks and recreation faculty on an comparative effectiveness study examining ways to aid adolescents with autism.

The research project is titled "Comparative Effectiveness of Recreational Therapy and Activity-Based Programs as Non-Pharmacological Interventions of Adolescents with Autism." The work is funded by a $4,000 grant from the University's joint Faculty/Student Research Grants Program.

Students learn mummification skills

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Most people have an instant reaction to seeing a mummy, in person or pictures - "Wow."

Slippery Rock University students showed a similar response Wednesday when they learned the gruesome aspects of ancient embalming, including Egyptian techniques used to extract brains and organs from bodies before mummification.

SRU's ARHS scores CAACURH Conference regional awards

Slippery Rock University's Association of Residence Hall Students scored a Central Atlantic Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls Building Block of the Year Award, and Hannah Malloy, a psychology major from Pittsburgh and conference planner and a team of SRU students scored a Silver Pin for their work in presenting the conference at SRU.

This conference served as CAACURH's annual business meeting and included a recognition ceremony.

SRU graduate serves as Sochi Paralympic Games guide

Kimberlee Seevers, a 1980 Slippery Rock University physical education graduate, has been named one of four guides for a member of the 2014 Paralympic Alpine skiing team participating in next week's Paralympic Games in Sochi Russia.

The games, which will be carried in part on NBC and NBC Sports Network, run March 7-16.

SRU alumni's documentary film touts first park in America

Scott Spinucci, a 1991 Slippery Rock University communication graduate, has had his most-recent documentary film "America's First Park: River Common," based on the origin of the nation's first park that was established in Wilkes-Barre, aired on Fox, CW and MyTV.

Spinucci, a Wilkes-Barre native, now with AppleCart Films and Integrated Media Services, is continuing to work with elected officials for a national monument celebrating the park's founding.

Judy Werner, a Slippery Rock University associate professor of mathematics, has received the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics Outstanding Contribution to Mathematics Education Award.

SRU students provide income tax help

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - It's that time again - time to file your federal taxes. But don't worry, you could be eligible for help filing.

Slippery Rock University is again partnering with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service to offer free tax return assistance for taxpayers who earned less than $50,000 in 2013. SRU is hosting a tax preparation site on Elm Street for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.

SRU researchers examine mandatory 'like it before you see it' concept

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Imagine having to tell all your friends and neighbors that you like something before actually seeing it. That's the way some advertising is headed and E. Mitchell Church, Slippery Rock University assistant professor of computer science and his student researcher Samantha Passarello, are trying to determine why and if that is a profitable business concept.

The SRU researchers are using a $4,700 grant from the University's joint Faculty/Student Research Grants Program to support their "Mandatory Endorsement Solicitation in Online Social Networks" research project.

Hawk performs final trumpet recital

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Stephen Hawk, a Slippery Rock University professor of music and mentor to hundreds of students during his 25 years at SRU, will go out the way he came in - playing trumpet.

Hawk, who will retire in May, will present his final faculty trumpet recital at 4 p.m., Feb. 23, in Swope Recital Hall.

New $59,340 seismograph boosts student research opportunities

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Picture Slippery Rock University students conducting science fieldwork in a variety of locations - direct investigation of exposed rocks above ground and now indirect imaging of rocks below ground for the first time thanks to the University's purchase of a $59,340 seismograph.

SRU has ordered a 48-channel seismograph that will allow students to explore and visualize subservice geologic structures and strata. The system measures seismic waves, or underground acoustics, that travel underground. Students will be able to map up to 100 meters of rock features, said Brian Miller, SRU assistant professor of geography, geology and the environment.

SRU presents 'The Robber Bridegroom'

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University students will present seven performances of the musical "The Robber Bridegroom" March 7-13.

The performances will be a tribute to long-time SRU professor and performing arts advocate, Thom "TC" Cobb. Cobb, an SRU associate professor of dance who joined SRU in 1978, will retire in May. He is choreographer for the production and has collaborated with theatre for more than 10 years of stage productions.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Online Rocket, Slippery Rock University's online student newspaper, has been awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, making it one of five top online newspapers in the nation.

Chef Michael Twitty cooks 'kush' at SRU

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Michael William Twitty, a culinary historian of African and African-American foods, knows firsthand that all knowledge does not come from books - sometimes it comes from food - "and you have to taste it."

Twitty, known nationally for his cooking and history lectures about food, especially African-American and slave-days cooking, visited Slippery Rock University Wednesday to work as a guest chef at the Fusion Station in Boozel Dining Hall and host a question-and-answer session in the Smith Student Center.

SRU welcomes Nanjing students

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Ten students and an instructor from Nanjing University in Nanjing, China, are arriving this weekend at Slippery Rock University to begin enhancing their English language skills and learn new skills related to the hospitality industry.

The project, headed by Kurt Schimmel, dean of SRU's College of Business, Information and Social Sciences, and Genevieve Bordogna, associate director for international student admissions, Tess Crispin, adviser for international and study abroad, Steve Park, ESL program director, is the result of SRU's resent travel to Chinese universities.

SRU researchers 'thinking to make it so'

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - "Thinking will make it so" is the philosophy behind Slippery Rock University Computer Science Professor Sam Thangiah and his two student researchers as they work to use human brainwaves to control a computer robot.

The three researchers are using a $5,000 grant from the University's joint Faculty/Student Research Grants Program to support "A Brain-Computer Interface to Control a Remote Mobile Robot" research project that is already seeing positive results.

New engineering, dental agreements provide SRU undergraduates options

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's new 4-plus-4 dental articulation program with West Virginia University and dual-degree engineering program with the University of Pittsburgh will offer SRU students early admission and reduced costs.

Articulation agreements formalize an early admission process for qualified SRU students looking to forge a career in engineering or dental surgery. SRU has approved several accelerated programs in recent years because they enable undergraduate students to transition into majors at other institutions while benefiting from SRU's affordable tuition.

Sri Lanka agreement grows SRU's international presence

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Add Sri Lanka to the growing list of countries where Slippery Rock University partners with international institutions. Sponsoring more than 30 international alliances, SRU continues to expand educational opportunity, promote cultural understanding and play a vital role in training a globally competitive workforce.

Most recently, SRU has signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Peradeniya, located outside of Kandy, Sri Lanka. The public university educates 11,000 students in the fields of medicine, arts, science, agricultural, engineering, dental sciences and allied health.

SRU readies for 450 science students

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - With the emphasis on STEM - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - Slippery Rock University will again welcome some 450 junior high and senior high students to the 57th annual Region IX Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science as they vie for SRU scholarships and other prizes Feb. 22.

SRU will again offer a $12,000, four-year scholarship to the top senior and the top junior award recipients.

History series details cooking, civil rights

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's "History Series on Racial Justice" continues with a Feb. 20 cooking demonstration by Michael Twitty, a Southern cuisine historian, and a March 3 keynote address on the civil rights movement by William Sturkey, history professor at the University of North Carolina.

The programs, at SRU's Old Stone House and the Smith Student Center Ballroom, are free and open to the public.

Award-winning photographer visits SRU

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Art Becker, an Erie-based commercial photographer who has photographed former U.S. President Bill Clinton and the pope, among others, will lecture about his craft and show his photographs at 12:30 p.m., Feb. 18, at Slippery Rock University's Art Building.

The title of his presentation is "Every Picture Tells a Story." Becker, who switched to digital technology 12 years ago, said he would talk about his passion for photography and provide pointers for marketing images.

SRU track cross county teams earn All-Academic honors

NEW ORLEANS – The Slippery Rock University men’s and women’s cross country teams have earned All-Academic honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, and five members of the women’s team and three members of the men’s team have been placed on their respective All-Academic team.

In order for teams to earn the All-Academic honor, the collective cumulative grade point average for all members on the roster must be above 3.0. A total of 92 men's cross country programs in Division II earned the honor. SRU is one of 89 institutions to earn the All-Academic title for both its men's and women's teams. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference led all Division II conferences with 15 women's teams and nine men's teams earning the honor.

Washington & Jefferson names SRU graduate head coach

Dale Boring, a 1994 Slippery Rock University exercise science graduate and a 1997 physical education master’s degree recipient, has been hired as head coach of the Washington & Jefferson College cross country and track and field teams.

Boring, who competed in both cross country and track and field for SRU, formerly served as head coach of the Mars High School cross country and track and field teams. He also coordinated the Get F.A.S.T. Camps to improve the skill levels of local youth.

SRU graduate leads Spartanburg, S.C., Chamber of Commerce

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Charles White, a 1968 Slippery Rock University physical education graduate and a 1971 master’s of physical education recipient, has been named interim president and chief executive officer of the Spartanburg [S.C.] Area Chamber of Commerce.

White assumed leadership of the organization earlier this year and will serve until a permanent replacement is hired.

Chris Elliott, a 2000 Slippery Rock University history graduate and a former SRU wrestler and coach, has been named athletic director of Kennedy Catholic High School in nearby Hermitage.

SRU graduate signs second season with Erie Explosion

Jayson Nickson, a 2012 Slippery Rock University safety and environmental management graduate and former member of the SRU football team, has been signed to training camp with the Erie Explosion, pro indoor football team in Erie, for the 2014 season.

The team is part of the Continental Indoor Football League.

SRU launches I-THINK research project

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Everyone knows two plus two is four, but few can explain how they reached the answer. Students involved in Slippery Rock University Jeremy Lynch's "I-THINK" research will soon be able to explain their conclusions.

Lynch, an assistant professor of special education in SRU's College of Education, is using a $4,567 grant from the University's joint Faculty/Student Research Grants Program to support "I THINK: A Framework for Improving Mathematical Problem Skills;" a project in conjunction with a local elementary schools.

SRU history professor's latest Abzug bio hits bookstores

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Most faculty members at Slippery Rock University have at least a passing knowledge of the American political figure Bella Abzug; students, maybe not so much, but Alan Levy, SRU history professor says, "They should."

To help that cause, Levy, SRU's most prolific biographer, has published the second volume in his two-book set memorializing the life and times of the New York congresswoman who made her way onto the national political scene in the 1970s and '80s, and who he believes wanted to eventually run for the Democratic Party's nomination for president of the United States.

SRU faculty members offer study, learning tips, ideas

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Tamra Schiappa, Slippery Rock University associate professor of geography, geology and the environment, shared her views on metacognition, a fancy way of talking about an individual's knowledge about their own thinking, with faculty in an effort to strategize on ways to encourage students to be even more involved in their education.

"Engaging students, both in and outside the classroom, is an important part of learning and a gateway to success," Schiappa said.

SRU ARHS hosts three-day regional conference opening today

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's Association of Residence Hall Students is hosting the Central Atlantic Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls No Frills Conference today through Sunday on the SRU campus.

In addition to Pennsylvania, the conference will draw some 140 college students and staff members from West Virginia, Ohio, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and the District of Columbia.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The excitement begins building when people arrive at Slippery Rock University's Planetarium. Lights dim. Stargazers settle into reclined seats to gaze at the dome overhead, becoming virtual astronauts on a tour of the celestial bodies.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's enrollment services area has earned a Gold Award in the Social Media category and a Silver Award in the Education Digital Marketing Awards category, both part of the Higher Education Marketing Report Publications Group awards program.

The Gold Award came for its work with an Instagram project, and the silver for its undergraduate and graduate digital recruitment viewbooks.

SRU’s Kengor earns NCBWA preseason All-America honor

AUSTIN, Texas – Will Kengor, a Slippery Rock University undeclared major from Pittsburgh and a shortstop on the baseball team, has been named a first-team member of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II Preseason All-America team.

The preseason honor came on the heels of Kengor’s selection last spring as a third-team NCBWA postseason All-American. He also earned second-team Daktronics All-America and third-team Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association All-America honors in his junior season.

Two former SRU runners capture unofficial Georgia race title

Patrick Reagan, a 2010 Slippery Rock University exercise science graduate, and Jeff Weiss, a 2009 SRU health and physical education graduate, took top honors in the 10K Critz Tybee Run Fest on Tybee Island, Ga., according to the online SavannahNow report.

Both runners earned All-America honors while SRU students. The pair had not competed against one another since 2008.

SRU punter earns D2Football.com All-America honors

LIBERTY, Mo. – James McCombie, a Slippery Rock University park and resource management major from Nicktown and a punter on the SRU football squad, has been named to D2Football.com honorable mention All-America honors.

The latest All-America honor was the fourth received by McCombie, who was named to the Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America Team last week.
