CBS football special includes SRU’s Alan Levy
Alan Levy, Slippery Rock University history professor and an expert on the desegregation of professional sports, is expected to be part of CBS’ “Third and Long,” a three-hour special examining racial segregation in professional football airing from 1-2 p.m., Dec. 17, and 4-6 p.m., Dec. 25.
Levy, who joined SRU in 1985, wrote “Tackling Jim Crow: Racial Segregation in Professional Football,” which describes how the Cleveland Browns and the Los Angeles Rams broke the racial barrier in 1946, a year before Jackie Robinson broke the race barrier in professional baseball.
Levy has written a number of books, including biographies of baseball strikeout artist Rube Waddell and New York Yankees manager Joe McCarthy.
