SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – G.I. Jobs magazine, published by Pittsburgh-based, veteran-owned Victory Media, has again named Slippery Rock University to its annual list of Military Friendly Schools. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students.
Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. The common bond is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience.
SRU was also recently named a “Great College to Work For” by The Chronicle for Higher Education and “A Best in the Northeast” university by The Princeton Review.
SRU currently enrolls nearly 180 veterans.
“We are again pleased to have been included on this list that I am certain is reviewed by those leaving military service and considering college. Those reviewing the list will know that SRU works hard to make sure any benefits they are entitled to will be received if they elect to enroll here,” said Patty Hladio, director of financial aid. She also provides advice and helps veterans with the application process.
“We welcome those from the military, in part, because they bring a different perspective to the classroom that they can share with fellow students,” she said.
Hladio said the University welcomes veterans and provides guidance about the system and how they can best make use of government programs that will benefit them as an SRU student.
“This list is especially important now because the Post-9/11 GI Bill has given veterans virtually unlimited financial means to go to school,” said Rich McCormack, G.I. Jobs publisher. “Veterans can now enroll in any school, provided they’re academically qualified. Veterans need a trusted friend to help them decide where to get educated.”
Criteria for making the Military Friendly Schools List included efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, results in recruiting military and veteran students and academic accreditations.
The list was compiled through research starting last April during which G.I. Jobs polled more than 7,000 schools nationwide.
