Ogoreuc earns presidency of drowning prevention alliance
Robert Ogoreuc, Slippery Rock University assistant professor of physical education, has been elected president of the California-based National Drowning Prevention Alliance. The non-profit organization works to reduce child drowning by encouraging the use of prevention strategies.
Ogoreuc, coordinator of SRU’s aquatics minor, will serve a one-year term.
“We have to make parents and their children cognizant about providing layers of protection,” he said. “Parents need to actively supervise their children. If they have a swimming pool at their home, they should use four-sided barriers around the pool and have access to rescue equipment.”
SRU is a leader in drowning prevention and hosted the ninth annual National Drowning Prevention Symposium in April.
Ogoreuc, an SRU graduate, joined the University in 1996. He was the driving force in developing SRU’s aquatics minor and has been involved nationally in revising the American Red Cross’ Water Safety Manual. Aquatic International Magazine named him one of the 25 most powerful people in aquatics in 2005.
