New Castle NAACP honors SRU chapter president

Shantreece Johnson, a Slippery Rock University social work major from Erie, is the first recipient of the Evelyn P. Ward Leadership Scholarship, which will be awarded annually to the president of the NAACP Student Chapter at SRU.

Johnson was among the founding members of the campus National Association for the Advancement of Colored People chapter in 2009. She was elected president in 2010 and plans to graduate in 2012.

“I have worked diligently and tried to instill some of the values that we have as a chapter into other organizations on our campus. I believe that in order to stand together, we must first learn to sit together and discuss the importance of uplifting those around us,” Johnson wrote in an essay written for the award.

The award honors Ward’s 31 years of service to the New Castle Chapter of the NAACP.
