Rock volleyball earns NCAA Tournament berth

INDIANAPOLIS – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team earned its fifth berth into the NCAA Division II Tournament in the last seven years Sunday when the Division II Women’s Volleyball Committee announced the 64-team 2011 tournament field.

The Rock earned the No. 7 seed in the Atlantic Region and will travel to California University of Pennsylvania, Nov. 17, for the opening round match against second-seeded Wheeling Jesuit, the champions of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

SRU and Wheeling Jesuit will be meeting for the second time this season; The Rock lost to WJ, 3-2, at home Oct. 12. Wheeling Jesuit has an 8-5 advantage over SRU in the all-time series.

The top eight seeds in the Atlantic Region were California University of Pennsylvania, Wheeling Jesuit, Clarion, Gannon, Edinboro, Lock Haven, St. Augustine and SRU. All four first round matches will be at California, Pa. The winner of the SRU–Wheeling Jesuit match-up will play the victor from the Clarion-Lock Haven contest in the second round.

SRU finished the regular season with an overall record of 20-11, including a school record-winning streak of 14 straight matches to begin the season. The Rock placed fifth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division with a PSAC record of 9-10.
