SRU women’s soccer reaches NCAA Sweet 16

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The 23rd-ranked Slippery Rock University women’s soccer team handed No. 15 Kutztown University a 2-1 defeat in the second round of the NCAA tournament Sunday at Keystone Field, giving SRU its first-ever berth in the NCAA Round of 16.

 The Rock, which has a 16-4-2 record for the year, faces California University of Pennsylvania in the third round Nov. 18 at the College of St. Rose in Albany. The East Region’s top seed will host the third and fourth round of play. Bridgeport, which was the No. 1 seed in the nation, lost in a penalty kick shootout Sunday.

 Kutztown finishes the 2011 season with a record of 16-6-0. The Golden Bears finished the game with advantages of 14-9 in total shots, 9-7 in shots on goal and 14-0 in corner kicks.

 Earlier in the year, Kutztown defeated SRU 1-0 in the regular season and 4-0 in the PSAC semifinals.
