Riding team hosts square dance

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – “All four ladies out to the right of the ring and when you get there it’s everyone swing, allemande left and when get home bow to your partner,” is not a foreign language class at Slippery Rock University, it’s what participants in Saturday’s “Hoedown Showdown” will be learning while having fun.

The fundraising event, sponsored by the Western Riding Team at SRU, is from 7-10 p.m. in SRU’s Storm Harbor Equestrian Center.

“The idea came about when we were trying to think of ideas about how to raise money,” said Averi Clements, an SRU Spanish education major from McMurray and one of the team’s seven members.

“We thought both students and members of the community would enjoy an old-fashioned square dance,” she said. “We knew we would also have to teach the steps, and we thought students would enjoy the opportunity.”

Proceeds benefit the team that rides, trains horses and competes at horse shows in the region and as far away as New York.

“We’d like to get 20 to 50 people out for the event, which will center on square dances not line dances,” Clements said.

Members of the Castle Paw’s and Taw’s, based in New Castle, will be on hand to teach the steps. Len Dougherty will be the caller.

The equestrian center, located on Harmony Road, focuses on equine-assistant activities for individuals with disabilities. The center serves more than 300 persons with disabilities each year with the assistant volunteers. The center offers riding lessons to individuals with disabilities and is a facility for field trips for special education students.

Admission is $10 for the general public, $5 for SRU students.
