SRU’s UPB schedules MTV’s Maci Bookout

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Maci Bookout, best known for her role on MTV’s reality show “Teen Mom” will explain her choices and life when she lecture at 8 p.m., Feb. 22, as part of Slippery Rock University’s University Program Board Lecture Series.

The lecture is in the University Union.

Bookout gave birth to her son Bentley three years ago at age 16, potentially putting the brakes on her ambitious plans for college and socializing, but she decided to not let that happen.

Her inspirational lecture includes talk about how teen motherhood made her more determined to follow her dreams, continue her education and juggle the role of being a mother while pursuing her dreams of a better life.

Enrolled in college, Bookout is majoring in journalism and has talked of writing a book about her teen-mother experiences. She also lectures at high schools about teen pregnancy.

Bookout’s message often strikes a chord with parents and nontraditional students enrolled in college as she encourages all students to maintain a positive outlook.

She has said she went on the reality show to show others who might get pregnant that there are options for moving forward with their life goals.

The popular television reality show was a spin-off of “16 and Pregnant.” It chronicled the lives of four teenage mothers as they dealt with motherhood. The show focuses on the challenges and struggles of teenage parenthood, including boyfriends, family and friend pressures. The show drew millions of viewers, with the finale bringing in an estimated 5.6 million.

The show’s fourth season is expected to begin airing in the spring.

The lecture is free for current SRU students with valid ID. Non-students (limited to 250) will pay $5.
