BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS TO
SUPPORT LOCAL FEED MY SHEEP FOOD CUPBOARD AS SLIPPERY ROCK
UNIVERSITY MARKS DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., DAY
SLIPPERY
ROCK, Pa. – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day will be marked
at Slippery Rock University with a two-day “Three-on-Three
Basketball Tournament” held to support the local Feed My
Sheep Food Cupboard and as a way of showing area students that
community service can be fun.
Co-sponsored
by SRU’s Connector Corps and the Robert N. Aebersold Student
Recreation Center along with the Slippery Rock Area Parks and
Recreation Department, the traditional event is titled “A Day
on the Courts, Not a Day Off.” The entry fee for the
Sunday-Monday [Jan. 19-20] tournament is a minimum of 15
non-perishable food items per team. The team supplying the most
items will be presented “The Team with the Most Heart”
plaque and gift certificates. Winning teams in each division of the
tournament will receive plaques.
Opening
day play will have age and gender brackets for third- through
eight-graders and separate play for high school students. Check-in
at the Aebersold Center for elementary- and middle-school students
is 2 p.m.; 5 p.m. for those in grades 9 through 12. The
college-student tournament will be held Jan. 20 with recreation
center check-in set for 5 p.m.
Registration
forms, due back by Wednesday [Jan. 15] for Sunday play, and
Thursday [Jan. 16] for Jan. 20 play, are available at the Slippery
Rock School District and Slippery Rock Parks offices, the Aebersold
Center and at the Institute for Community, Service-Learning and
Nonprofit Leadership, Room 214, Spotts World Culture Building at
SRU.
