BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS TO SUPPORT LOCAL FEED MY SHEEP FOOD CUPBOARD AS SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY MARKS DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., DAY

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day will be marked at Slippery Rock University with a two-day “Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament” held to support the local Feed My Sheep Food Cupboard and as a way of showing area students that community service can be fun.

Co-sponsored by SRU’s Connector Corps and the Robert N. Aebersold Student Recreation Center along with the Slippery Rock Area Parks and Recreation Department, the traditional event is titled “A Day on the Courts, Not a Day Off.” The entry fee for the Sunday-Monday [Jan. 19-20] tournament is a minimum of 15 non-perishable food items per team. The team supplying the most items will be presented “The Team with the Most Heart” plaque and gift certificates. Winning teams in each division of the tournament will receive plaques.

Opening day play will have age and gender brackets for third- through eight-graders and separate play for high school students. Check-in at the Aebersold Center for elementary- and middle-school students is 2 p.m.; 5 p.m. for those in grades 9 through 12. The college-student tournament will be held Jan. 20 with recreation center check-in set for 5 p.m.

Registration forms, due back by Wednesday [Jan. 15] for Sunday play, and Thursday [Jan. 16] for Jan. 20 play, are available at the Slippery Rock School District and Slippery Rock Parks offices, the Aebersold Center and at the Institute for Community, Service-Learning and Nonprofit Leadership, Room 214, Spotts World Culture Building at SRU.
