SRU elementary education graduate earns honors for teaching

Grace Bickert, a 1993 Slippery Rock University masters of elementary education graduate, was saluted recently by the Shaler Area School District board of education for her 37 years work as a kindergarten teacher at Marzolf Primary School and her dedication to helping create a close-knit district committee.

As part of the honors, Bickert was named a "Distinguished Alumni" of the district's Millvale High School.

Bickert was cited for starting hundreds of children on their path to learning and her work last year in helping create the full-day kindergarten program at her school. Bickert had previously taught at the district's Rogers Elementary and the Friday Street schools.

She is known for providing children's books for inclusion in holiday gift baskets delivered annually to needy families by her district, according to a story in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

In accepting her award, she said that while advances in technology have changed how she teaches, the biggest improvement in education has been the inclusion of special needs pupils in the regular classroom.

She is the author of three books published by Incentive Publications, including her latest, "Including the Special Needs Child." "I really believe [inclusion] makes for better students," she told the Post-Gazette, explaining that integrating special needs students helps everyone become more tolerant and understanding.

Bickert's other books are "Food to Learn and Grow On" and "Celebration Centers."
