SRU’S BAILEY LIBRARY SERIES TO DETAIL INTEGRATION OF NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – “Encounters: Bailey Library’s Authors and Artists Series” will present Dr. Alan Levy, SRU history professor and author of “Tackling Jim Crow: Racial Segregation and Professional Football” at a 3 p.m. lecture Feb. 23. The public is invited.

Sponsored by SRU’s library, Office of Intercultural Programs and the department of history, the lecture will be presented in the library’s Special Collections Rooms as part of the university’s “Black History Month.”

Levy, an SRU history professor since 1985, had his latest book, an examination of the segregation and integration of the National Football League, published by McFarland and Co., Inc. The program will examine his research as well as provide an overview of the league’s current integration status.

Author of eight books, Levy has completed works on American music, including a biography of the composer Edward MacDowell, and a look at baseball legend Rube Waddell. He is completing a biography of the baseball manager Joe McCarthy.

Bailey Library’s ongoing series is designed to promote usage of the library.

Editor’s Note: A news release detailing the new book was sent earlier and is available on www.SRU.edu (click on ‘More” and look for Levy.)
