SRU's Deighton earns soccer Player of the Year honor

Jeremy Deighton, a Slippery Rock University senior soccer player from Broadview Heights, Ohio, was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division Player of the Year for the second straight season.

The PSAC voted during the summer to end its traditional two-team system for naming All-Conference soccer teams and instead agreed to name four forwards, five midfielders, five defenders and two goalkeepers to first team honors.

Deighton earned his second consecutive All-PSAC honor at forward and his second straight PSAC-West Player of the Year honor after leading the team and the league in scoring with 17 goals and seven assists.

He was named the PSAC Championship game's Most Valuable Player after scoring one goal and assisting the game-winner in a 2-1 win over No. 1 Millersville last week. He also led the league this season in game-winning goals with eight. Deighton is on the ballot for Atlantic Region Player of the Year honors as well.

Slippery Rock hosts Mercyhurst at 5 p.m. Friday at in N. Kerr Thompson Stadium for the opening round of the NCAA playoffs. Millersville and Charleston play at 2 p.m. Friday.
