Plum High School inducts SRU trustee John Hicks into Hall of Fame
John Hicks, a member of the Slippery Rock University Council of Trustees and a professor emeritus of elementary education and early childhood at SRU, will be inducted into the Plum High School Sports Hall of Fame Nov. 12.
The event is at the Edgewood Country Club in Plum.
Hicks, who retired from SRU in 2002, is a 1954 graduate of Plum High where he was a standout athlete. His play attracted several college scholarships and an invitation to play in the Big 33 football game.
Hicks played football at both Brandeis University and SRU. He also competed as a player-coach for the Army regimental football team at Ft. Jackson in South Carolina, and was well known throughout the competitive sandlot baseball leagues in the region.
His career in education spanned nearly 30 years, beginning as a public school teacher and progressed to the upper levels of higher education as an assistant to the dean and to professor emeritus at SRU.
In addition to his classroom work, Hicks coached baseball at nearly every level, including American Legion, high school and college. In 1968, his Shaw High School team won the Ohio state baseball title. Before joining SRU, he was a teacher and coach in East Cleveland, where the Cleveland Wahoo Club named him "Coach of the Year."

During his tenure at SRU, Hicks was known as "an advocate for public school teaching." He was a board member and served in leadership roles for the Association of Teacher Educators and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. He once represented the ATE at its European conference in Belgium and received SRU's Outstanding Service Award.
Hicks attended Brandeis University, John Carroll University, Kent State University and Penn State University.
