SRU PLANS TWO, SIX-WEEKEND ‘PARALEGAL CERTIFICATE
COURSE’ PROGRAMS TO TRAIN STUDENTS IN LAW OFFICE, COURTROOM
LITIGATION WORK
SLIPPERY
ROCK, Pa. – Two, intensive six-weekend “Paralegal
Certificate Course” programs designed to train students to
assist trial attorneys in courtroom litigation will be offered by
Slippery Rock University’s Office of Continuing
Education.
The
separate fall and spring programs will include 84 hours of
instruction by experienced attorneys and will provide a
professional certificate from SRU to those who successfully
complete the training. The sessions will be held at the newly
remodeled SRU Center for Lifelong and Community Learning.
Students
may select to attend either the fall or spring program. Sessions
will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, Oct. 19
through Nov. 24. The spring session will run March 22-May 4.
Classes will deal with legal terminology, ethics, the litigation
process, introduction to the evidence procedure, legal research,
legal writing, identifying relevant law, the appellate procedure
and other related topics.
Richard
Comings, director of SRU’s continuing education program,
explains the program is offered in conjunction with The Center for
Legal Studies based in Golden, Colo. “It is a program that is
practice-oriented and relates to those areas of the law in which
legal assistants are most in demand. The program has no
prerequisites, but there is significant homework. This is a program
that will help students increase their office’s efficiency,
productivity and billable hours as well as learn new marketable job
skills,” he says.
Tuition
is $915 plus textbooks. Handouts and assistance with placement in a
voluntary internship for those who finish in the top 25 percent of
their class with an “A” will be provided. The course
may also be taken on video, CD-Rom, audio or on-line.
