SRU ‘HEALTHFEST ’03’ TO AGAIN OFFER FREE AND LOW-COST HEALTH SCREENINGS

IN DAYLONG PROGRAM PROMOTING AREA’S WELLBEING

          SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Personal health for all age groups – students and adults – is the focus of this year’ “Healthfest 2003” offered by Slippery Rock University as a community outreach program. The daylong event will offer a series of free or low-cost health screenings designed to help community residents keep on top of their health indicators.

          The annual event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 14 in the Robert N. Aebersold Student Recreation Center offering more than 75 information and screening booths.

          Lead by co-chairs Brian Mortimer, coordinator of wellness at the Russell Wright Fitness Center in the student recreation center, and Dr. Nancy Gabrielsen, assistant professor of allied health, “Healthfest 2003” aims to further the university’s mission as a caring community of lifelong learners connecting with the world by involving all segments of the local community. Residents from throughout the region are invited to attend.

          Health or health-related agencies and organizations, along with appropriate campus departments and programs, will participate offering information, brochures and health screenings.

          Entertainment, related to health and wellness, will also be part of the day with the Slippery Rock Senior Center offering a “Line Dancing and Clogging” exhibition in addition to a “Labyrinth Presentation” outlining the benefits of walking meditation presented by Cheryl Andre in conjunction with the Newman Center at 10:30 a.m. The rock cheerleaders will perform at 12:30 p.m. and the SRU music department’s “Flute and Jazz Combo” will perform at 12:45 p.m.

Screenings will include:

•          Osteoporosis -- Butler Memorial Hospital Imaging Center

•          Flu shots -- ConcordiaCare Visiting Nurses  ($15 fee for community, Medicare B & Security Blue accepted)

•          Flu shots (SRU students) – McLachlan Student Health Center

•          Blood pressure – Countryside and Trinity Living Center

•          Body composition  -- Exercise Science Society and United Community Hospital

•          Senior fitness tests – SRU students majoring in exercise science or the physiology of aging

•          Cholesterol -- Jameson Health System 

•          Massage Therapy – Chair Massage ($3 seniors and students for 10 min/$5 faculty/staff and community for 10 min)

•          Depression  --  Mental Health Association in Butler County

•          Mammograms -- Northwest Medical Center(by special arrangement for SRU employees only; contact Human Resources)

•          Balance/Fall -- Passavant Retirement Community

•          Shoulder assessments, balance assessments, and other related assessments -- SRU School of Physical Therapy

•          Oral cancer exams -- University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine

•          Exercise Science, Physiology of Aging(Senior fitness test battery)

•          Vision – Wal-Mart Vision Center
