Political cartoonist Joe Szabo draws topic for multi-media lecture
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Joe Szabo, an internationally recognized political cartoonist, will deliver a multimedia presentation titled "America's Political Image Abroad: Foreign Political Cartoons" when he visits Slippery Rock University Wednesday.
The lecture is at 4 p.m. in the Advanced Technology and Science Hall.
A former editor, art director and cartoonist with reputable European and U.S. national newspapers and magazines, Szabo was the organizer and chairman of an international cartoon festival that drew professionals to Budapest, Hungary, from more than 30 countries.
He started his cartooning career in 1979, while serving as the second ranking editor of Hungary's most reputable newspaper, Magyar Nemzet. A year later he moved to Germany, then to the United States in 1981. His career in the media encompassed closely related fields. He launched a variety of print and electronic publications, mostly dedicated to the fine and diverse representation of cartoon art.
Among Szabo's cherished works is "The Finest International Political Cartoons of Our Time" series that showcases socio-political cartoons from nearly 60 countries by many world-renowned cartoonists, including 14 Pulitzer Prize recipients.
His most widely recognizable publication, WittyWorld International Cartoon Magazine, reached 103 countries for more than a decade.
Szabo is the recipient of 12 international awards, including an International Press Prize from Belgium and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Mexico.
The visit is being organized by Mark Daniels, professor of political science at SRU.
