KALEIDOSCOPE TOP CHOICE OUT OF 112 PROPOSALS FOR ARTS FESTIVAL NAME

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- With unanimous ayes, Kaleidoscope topped Bravo, Encore, Tapestries and Collage to become the new name of the Slippery Rock University Regional Arts Festival. A naming contest was open to the public.

Dorothy Wallace of Worth Township and Linda Breen of Robinson Township both entered Kaleidoscope, which got the nod from the Slippery Rock Regional Arts Alliance “because it best implies the spirit of the spring festival and lends itself to logo design,” said Dr. Diana Dreyer, assistant to the dean.

The College of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts, which sponsored the naming competition, gave Wallace a woven Slippery Rock throw, a Java City Mug and $5 in coupons. Breen said she wanted Wallace to receive the gifts because Wallace has lived in the community 24 years. The college received 112 proposals.

A kindergarten teacher at Prospect Elementary School, Wallace submitted Kaleidoscope because, like the arts festival, “Each person who looks at it gets something different. It’s ever changing, it’s colorful, it’s bright, it’s exciting.”

Breen, a painter herself, said, “I had this idea of a mosaic. I was trying to think of a word that had to do with changing art patterns, color and light.”

The Slippery Rock Regional Arts Alliance -- composed of a student, Student Life representatives, faculty, an Intermediate Unit IV representative, Dean Dr. William McKinney and Dr. Diana Dreyer -- chose the name. “Each of us submitted our top three favorites followed by a discussion of those ranking highest,” Dreyer said.

Other top choices included Artstravaganza and Artsplosion.
