SRU hosts domestic violence expert
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Valena Beety, the staff attorney with the Mississippi Innocence Project, a professor at the University of Mississippi and a former assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, will present "Stopping Dating Violence: Strategies on Campus and in Courts" at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
The free lecture will be in the Spotts World Culture Building Auditorium.
As a member of the U.S. Attorney's Office, Beety represented the United States in trials involving domestic violence. She has worked as a board member for Students Active For Ending Rape, served as a Rape Victim Advocate in Chicago and handled legal work evaluating current laws on trafficking of women and pursued public housing benefits for survivors of domestic violence.
A graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, she has published on the topic of asylum standards for mutilated women and has done a variety of work on committees such as the Chicago Legal Advocacy for Incarcerated Mothers and the Governor's Commission for the Status of Women.
Her experience and knowledge has gained her a reputation as a nationally recognized expert on the law, dating and domestic violence, and sexual assault. Her passion and commitment have brought her back to the university campus to share her interests, said Cindy LaCom, professor of English and director of SRU's Women's Center. The center is sponsoring Beety's visit.
While at SRU, Beety will also meet with a number of administrators in a workshop designed to discuss polices and procedures already in place and to strategize what additional programs and steps may be undertaken.
