SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Pam Arnhold, Slippery Rock University assistant professor of exercise and rehabilitative sciences, has been named the Adapted Physical Activity Professional of the year by the Pennsylvania State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. She will receive the award today in Valley Forge.

PSAHPERD is a non-profit membership association supporting professionals working to encourage active and healthy lifestyles. The association's executive board selected Arnhold as the most accomplished professor in the field for 2009-2010.
"We are naming her the top adapted physical education professor in the state," said Linda Woods Huber, PSAHPERD executive director. "This is a statewide award for professionalism and expertise in adapted physical education."
Arnhold joined SRU in 1989 as a professor in physical education and currently works in the department of exercise and rehabilitative sciences. She teaches "Adapted Aquatics," "Introduction to Adapted Physical Activity," "Adapted and Therapeutic Exercise" and "Assessment Techniques in Adapted Physical Activity."
            "I
t's humbling to be recognized by your peers," Arnhold said.
SRU offers the only adapted physical activity minor in Pennsylvania and a graduate program. The minor was named outstanding program of the year in 2008 nationally by The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance's Adapted Physical Activity Council.
The program prepares graduates to manage activity sessions for children and adults with disabilities. Students receive hands-on experience by leading swimming, gymnastic, horseback riding and track and field events with community clients.
"We have put a lot of hard work and a lot of effort into educating the public that people of all ability levels can participate in physical activity," Arnhold said.

Slippery Rock University is Pennsylvania's premier public residential university.
