fourth straight NCAA tournament berth

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -The Rock women's volleyball team has earned a berth in NCAA Division II national championship competition for an unprecedented fourth straight season and will see playoff action Thursday.

The receipt of this year's regional tournament berth earned Rock seniors Jen Blasko of Summit Hill, Courtney Fajerski of Pittsburgh and Anastasia Urbanik of Kalamazoo, Mich., the distinction of being the first group of SRU volleyball student-athletes to earn an NCAA berth in each of their four seasons of eligibility.

SRU, which has a 25-11 record, is the No. 6 seed in this year's Atlantic Region and will meet third-seeded Edinboro (26-8) in a first-round match at noon Thursday at California University of Pennsylvania.

Reigning regional champion California (37-1) is the top seed in and host team for the Atlantic Regional and will meet eighth-seeded Elizabeth City State (31-9) in opening-round action.

Wheeling Jesuit (28-9) is the No. 2 seed in the region and will take on West Virginia State (25-4) in the opening-round.

The No. 4 seed, Lock Haven (28-5) meets No. 5 Mercyhurst (21-14) in the other first-round match.

The Rock-Edinboro winner will play the Wheeling Jesuit-West Virginia State winner in second-round action Friday.

The regional finals will be played Saturday.

The Rock and Edinboro met twice during the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division season with the Fighting Scots taking both matches by 3-1 scores.

Edinboro was one of four teams in this year's regional competition that SRU played during regular-season action. The Green and White were 0-3 against California, 0-2 vs. both Edinboro and Mercyhurt and 1-0 vs. West Virginia State.
